Top 10 New Horror Games of 2020

Horror games are great stuff. They get you all tense and nervous, and are as close as you can get to a horror movie. The best part of all of this is that you are deeply involved in the action on the screen. It’s a great way to spend time, and the horror game market is huge. In 2020, you can expect plenty of new games that are guaranteed to get you scared. The following list is full of games that we most definitely recommend you play with the lights on.

Upcoming PS4 horror games 2020

Man of Medan

Man of Medan is out now, but it is part of a series of horror games that are going to be responsible for plenty of very scared PS4 owners. Man of Medan is a unique experience. It builds slow, with some suspense around events on a boat, and then the story soon becomes a thrilling tale of ghosts and some truly terrifying monsters.

However, the key thing about Man of Medan is the incredible Co-op gameplay. Find a friend to play with and you play as two separate characters in the same game. You help each other, react to each other’s actions, and for stretches of the game you don’t even see each other. It’s the closest thing to being an actor in a scary movie.

The Last of Us Part 2

This one is what PS4 players have been waiting for. Following up the action (mostly) from the first game, this one promises to have more creatures and zombie-like enemies. Expect to have many more sleepless nights as you fight and explore your way through the game.

While not strictly horror (the first game had a very touching and poignant feel), the game will have sequences that will make you feel like keeping the light on at night. And the beauty of the game (assuming it is similar to the first one and the developers haven’t lost their skills) is that it will look amazing, have the kind of audio that will creep you out, and a deep and involving storyline. It’s set to be a cinematic horror game that is deeply involving. You have been warned.

World of Horror

This is perhaps the most unique game you will see this year, as well as one of the scariest. It’s hard to explain the way the game looks, but if you imagine a black and white nightmare, with artistic but low-grade graphics, you’re kind of on the way to understanding what World of Horror looks like. It is quite unsettling, and may not be to everyone’s tastes. However, it is most definitely one of the most exciting titles for the PS4 in 2020.

The game has some excellent turn-based combat and what really makes it perfect for horror fans is the way it puts all the action inside a ‘graphic novel feel’. Anyone who has read the original Walking Dead comics knows how effective monochrome imagery can be in setting up a scary experience. You won’t see anything like World of Horror again this year, and we can pretty much guarantee this unique experience will terrify you.

Upcoming horror games on XBox One 2020

Carrion

Carrion is coming out, and we guarantee some rather gory thrills on this title. Essentially, you play a blob, a blob that wanders around the in-game environment killing people. That’s right, for a change, you play the bad guy.

From first impressions, it works really well. While you may be the bad guy, it feels oddly satisfying to take part in what is nothing short of a murderous rampage. But the way the game has a slightly cheesy feel makes the potential moral barriers easier to overcome. It’s a lot of fun, definitely very gory, and could well be a true standout game for the Xbox One in 2020.

The blob that you control grows bigger and bigger the more people you consume. There are a lot of strategies involved, so it could well be that most unique of games: a horror game where you are a thinking blob of flesh that kills hundreds of people.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2

While it may have the most complex title for any horror game, ever, this one has plenty of people excited. It looks like it could quite easily be one of the most exciting games of the year.

This is definitely a more mature game, and isn’t something that younger players should come anywhere near. The developers have set the entire game at night, and we think players will find it particularly difficult to stay calm when playing.

The trailer for the game has already shown excited players the world that the character will be roaming around in. Expect to see some incredibly intense encounters with the FPS feel already making for some thrilling moments. There is plenty of blood, and a deep and compelling storyline.

At one point in the trailer, there is literally a tsunami of blood laying waste to a city. And if that isn’t enough to create over the top thrills and spills, we don't know what is.

Maneater

This is a hard one to get your head around, but the basic concept is that you are a very effective eating machine. In other words, you’re  a huge shark.

This is a gory game. You play a  shark that essentially needs to eat to live and make progress in the game. However, the effects are incredibly bloody and over the top. What makes it a horror is that you are playing the bad guy, and that you get to see and hear (especially hear) what it’s like to eat hundreds of humans. There is a lot of limb tearing and plenty of flesh ripping.

You get the drift. It’s nothing new as an idea. The Hungry Shark series has been popular on phones for a long time. But this is one game on the XBox One that takes full advantage of higher processing numbers and some (tragically) beautiful console graphics magic. Not for those who have a weak stomach, Maneater will be hitting XBox One in 2020 with it’s mouth wide open.

And the rest…

System Shock

Made for great and gory fun, System Shock is a full on thrill ride through a blood-spattered nightmare. The best way to look at this game is to imagine that you are in a sci-fi movie, similar perhaps to the settings in Doom. However, this one promises to dump in plenty of immersive fear and suffering.

If we are going to compare it to any other game, it has shades of Prey, which was a real horror classic. Hopefully this game can repeat some of the atmosphere and dread that came through that game so well. We have a hunch it will.

Predator: Hunting Grounds

This could well be the game that brings Predator back into the consciousness of gamers. To be honest, there has yet to be a good Predator game, and this one looks scary and gory enough to make a difference.

The good news about this one is that it allows you to be a Predator. That’s good news because it will certainly make gameplay more interesting. And the inclusion of a ‘prey’ role brings about a true sense of balance. We can see players choosing their favourite ‘side’ and really becoming immersed in the game. The gameplay looks fantastic, but because it is a bit of a one-off in that there has yet to be a great Predator game, we are waiting for this one with something like bated breath. Maybe it will be good. Who knows? In any case, it is certainly gory enough.

Remothered

This one is guaranteed to scare even the most jaded of gamers. It’s a survival horror game so there are plenty of tense moments and jump scares. However, the one thing that makes this one unique is the context. It was created by a fine Italian artist, and has graphics that are truly unsettling, while also very rich and beautiful.

There isn’t a lot of information coming out about it at the moment, but the feeling is generally very hopeful. It has a distinctly old-fashioned feel, lots of quiet corridors and shadowy corners, and the whole thing looks more like an actual horror movie than a game.

The gameplay promises to be atmospheric, and the graphics truly are beautiful to look at. Look out for this one, and be aware that it is a true psychological experience.

Little Nightmares 2

The first Little Nightmares was as unsettling as you could ever expect a story about a little girl wandering around a ghost ship could be. This one has not had many plot points released, but it looks to be more of the same. And that’s a good thing.

Scary and incredibly unsettling, the first was a real classic. With number 2 looking to be the same, expect to have  a very scary time if you get your hands on this game.

All in all, it looks to be a bumper year for gamers who like being spooked while enjoying the best quality gameplay.

Get ready to be scared.
